Julie Wartell
Continuing Lecturer, Department of Urban Studies and Planning
Julie Wartell is a continuing lecturer and staff research associate in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at University of California San Diego. As a continuing lecturer, she has taught the following courses: GIS for Urban and Community Planning; Environmental Design and Crime Prevention; Research Methods: Crime Analysis; and Craft Breweries and the Urban Economy. In her researcher capacity, she has worked with the Homelessness Hub at UC San Diego coordinating GIS and data and working with policymakers and NGOs to advance knowledge on homelessness for more effective planning and decision-making. In addition to her work at UCSD, Wartell has spent over 25 years conducting applied research on crime prevention and reduction, using geographic information systems for urban and community planning, and breweries and neighborhood change. Wartell has authored, co-authored or co-edited over 40 books and articles, including several in peer-reviewed publications. Academics and practitioners have used her research in numerous cities and countries around the world, and she is often invited to present her expertise at conferences as well as directly to governmental agencies, non-profits and communities.
